OUR HISTORY

Geografía is a contemporary dance organization in Austin, Texas, founded by Tejana dance artists, that creates and curates social justice-oriented works centering the embodied geographies of Latinx and BIPOC dance artists in Austin and beyond. Co-founded by Bonnie Alonzo-Hansen and the late Erica Saucedo, Geografía produces works that question Latina stereotypes, grapple with historical and current treatments of Latinx individuals in the U.S., celebrate and interrogate familial lineage, and evoke cultural artifacts to tap into surreal imaginings of the future. With the passing of Erica in June 2025, Geografía now also serves as a legacy project that honors her contributions to dance and continues the work she started with Bonnie in 2019.

To build community and discourse around lived experience, cultural exploration, and “artivism” in dance, Geografía provides a platform for artists to present original choreographic works exploring place and identity within a curated contemporary dance festival format. Social justice dance works are defined as those presenting viewpoints that depart radically from dominant narratives while inviting connection and coalition in communities. While the Latinx identifier was central to Geografía’s genesis, the organization now supports and elevates artists of any cultural background while ensuring Latinx and BIPOC artists remain central to the curation process.
